Yeah I gotta agree with Meltzer on this. Our top 6 defensemen may not be a #1 defensemen. But they all would be starters on almost any other NHL team. For this year and probably next, we're going to have to have to make due with a bunch of 3-4 Defensemen playing all the time. But hey, at least we don't have to hide guys like Parent and Krajicek.

If they "fail to upgrade" it will likely be because they were unable to find a smart deal available.

There's some that would provide the Flyers fellatio if they signed Matt Niskanen as a UFA for $6.5mm for 6 or 7 years....ignoring that he's had one really good season and is unproven as a top defenseman.

Timonen is not a top defenseman any more, but he's still solid and capable in a secondary role. Berube closely monitored his minutes last season and if he does so again, there's no reason to believe that Timonen-who's actual deal is $2mm in base and $1.5mm in easily achieved bonuses per Ren Lavoie- can't do well as a 2nd or 3rd pair guy.
